你的雅思写作有“篱笆”吗？

摘要：

　　在步入正题之前，我们先来学一个词：hedge。Oxford Dictionary定义是 “a fence or boundary formed by closely growing bushes or shrubs”，其实就是“矮树篱笆”。

　　那hedge是做什么用的呢？保护作用，保护园子里面的花花草草。这跟写作有什么关系？有！雅思写作是学术写作，authors需要用hedges来把自己保护起来，免受peers（同行们）攻击。

　　比较下面两个句子：

　　Air pollution might be the cause of this respiratory disease.

　　空气污染可能是这种呼吸疾病的诱因。

　　Air pollution is the cause of this respiratory disease.

　　空气污染是这种呼吸疾病的诱因。

　　第一句中的might就是“篱笆”，如果有人对你写的这句话提出异议，并且手上有的statistics, evidence and whatnot，你还可以勉强辩解：“我并没有说‘一定’是诱因，只是‘可能’哦！”；如果你忘写might，哈哈！Good look with defending yourself！恐怕到最后，你也只能eat humble pie（认栽了）。

　　We estimate that one in five marriages end in divorce.

　　我们估计20%的婚姻以离婚收场。

　　We find that one in five marriages end in divorce.

　　我们发现20%的婚姻以离婚收场。

　　第一句用的estimate这个词，不太容易招惹是非，谁也没指望estimate能有多精确；如果用了find这个词，You’d better be prepared. 可能有人会来找茬.

　　再看这两句：

　　I believe that college education is not important.

　　我认为，大学教育不重要。

　　College education is not important.

　　大学教育不重要。

　　第一句是我的观点，我的观点可以荒谬、可以无厘头，但又关别人什么事呢？而第二句更像是陈述事实，这句子写出来，恐怕会激起众怒。

　　通过几个例子，大家可能有点儿明白hedge的作用了。那我就再多给大家介绍几种“篱笆”，以便大家选购。

情态助动词（表示可能）	may, might, could, would, should	Globalization might have positive influence on our economy. There could be several reasons why this is the case.
一些表达“似是而非”的动词	To estimate, to seem, to appear, to assume,	This opinion appears to make sense.
表可能的形容词	Possible, probable, likely,	This measure is likely to be effective.
表可能的副词	Perhaps, possibly, probably, practically, presumably, virtually	There is, perhaps, a good reason why many chose to migrate to big cities. The twins look virtually identical.
一些副词，表达“大概”、“差不多”、“常常”、“有时候”等	Approximately, roughly, about, occasionally, usually, generally, somewhat, somehow,	About half of the population lives below the poverty line. Fuel prices in this country are generally lower than its neighbors.
双重“篱笆”	It would indicate that… It may suggest that… It seems likely that…	If the dog has a history of getting in the garbage it may suggest the problem is due to ingestion of spoiled food.
多重“篱笆”	It would seem somewhat unlikely that… It seems reasonable to assume that… It may appear somewhat speculative to assume that	It may appear somewhat speculative to assume that this lung condition could be caused by smoking.
