Never in human history have people witnessed such a huge proportion of individuals choosing to live by themselves, far away from their families, as it is in our current society. Its causes and impacts are worthy of our consideration. =39

The cause has to be traced back to urbanization in which swarms of people leave their hometowns and flood into the cities to seek more opportunities and better lives. The metropolitan cities, in all its glory, has promised its citizens and admirers more jobs, higher income, a brighter future, a convenient and modernized lifestyle and a greater variety of entertainment. In a word, they present you with everything you ever hope for, and more. This fantasy, fueled by the ever-present mass media that show fancy images of city lives, has the magical power to draw an increasing number of people to the cities to live individually, away from everyone they are familiar with at home. =115

Like everything else, this development naturally has its pros and cons. The upside is that this trend supplies a city with talents it urgently need for its economic and social advancement. However, the downside cannot be neglected. Individuals living in the cities are typically prepossessed with work, more alienated and lack a sense of belonging. To make the matter worse, the economic situation of the majority of people is not necessarily improved in comparison with their rich counterpart in the cities. In other words, the economic growth, accounted for by the hard work of the commoners, only serves to increase the gap between the affluent and the impoverished. All of the above cause tension among people, contribute to the soaring crime rate and in turn compromise the wellbeing of the society. =131

It is hard to draw a definitive conclusion as to whether the pros outweigh the cons. However, putting the pros vs. cons argument aside, it is safe to say this trend of people living more and more individually will continue in the foreseeable future as the society is condemned to move forwards and there is no going back. =58
